HIKING, BIRDING The 26 000 ha Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve lies within part of the very much larger Hottentots Holland Mountain Catchment Area. Situated at the western end of the Cape Folder ranges, and with more folded ranges extending northward, the reserve lies in a jumble of rugged and broken terrain, with narrow, forested gorged and steep cliffs. Many rivers have their sources in this area and rain in all directions but mostly to the south-east. Victoria Peak, at 1 589 m above sea level, is the highest peak I the reserve. More than 99 per cent of the area s covered by montane fynbos (heath) and many different endemic species grow here. Several antelope species occur and at least 110 bird species have been recorded in the area. This is a winter-rainfall area, receiving up to 3 500 mm on the higher peaks, but only 600 mm in the low-lying areas. Winds are strong and frequent. Location: South-east of Stellenbosch. Access: On foot only, along the Boland Hiking Trail. The nearest approach points for vehicles are at Jonkershoek Nature Conservation Station (off the Jonkershoek road, from Stellenbosch), Grabouw Nature Conservation Station (off the R321) and at Nuweberg Nature Conservation Station (off the R321) at the top of Viljoen's Pass. Permits are required. Accommodation: 5 30-bed huts with bunks/mattresses for hikers only; ablution facilities at Nuweberg Nature Conservation Station. to be booked in advance. Other facilities: The Boland Hiking Trail (55 km long, but with shorter options) runs through the reserve. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset, some sections of the reserve may be closed temporarily because of weather conditions: check beforehand with Nuweberg Nature Conservation Station. Beware: Sudden weather changes.
